HONG KONG, FEB. 17, 2003 (Zenit.org).- Authorities in mainland China are tightening controls on Catholics, warns Hong Kong Bishop Joseph Zen, according to the Associated Press.
A proposed anti-subversion law could also impact on the Catholic Church in Hong Kong because of its ties to underground churches in the mainland, the bishop said today.
«That's very bad for us,'' added Bishop Zen, who has been barred from the mainland since 1998.
For now, the 347,000 Catholics living in Hong Kong can worship freely under an autonomy arrangement devised when this ex-British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997, AP said.
