VATICAN, Oct 15, 01 (CWNews.com) - Latin-rite Patriarch Michel Sabbah of Jerusalem has said that a solution to the conflict between Israel and Palestine could eliminate 90 percent of the terrorism in the world.

Speaking with the Italian daily Avvenire, Patriarch Sabbah-- who is in Rome to participate in the Synod of Bishops-- said that American efforts to stamp out terrorism could not succeed as long as the Palestinian people are subject to occupation and oppression. "If the injustice continues," he said, "despite all the attacks against terrorists, there will always be anti-Western sentiments." Those sentiments, he continued, "are the seed of terror and death, so that terrorism "will always find fertile soil" until there is a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.
