VATICAN CITY, NOV. 13, 2000 (ZENIT.org).- The papal nuncio in Israel described Leah Rabin, widow of the Israeli prime minister who gave his life for peace, as "a symbol, keeping alive the heritage of her husband, Yitzhak."
Leah Rabin died Sunday of cancer at age 72. She had campaigned for peace after her husband was struck down by an assassin's bullet in 1995.
During an interview with the Vatican agency Fides, the nuncio, Archbishop Pietro Sambi, condemned the current situation in the Holy Land. "This killing and destruction is of no use to either side, Israelis or Palestinians," he said.
"Whatever leads toward peace is building a future; whatever leads in the direction of war, only destroys both peoples," he added. "These people have a right to peace and it cannot be sacrificed for the pride of their leaders. Furthermore, it was in this land that God chose to reveal his wisdom to men, and it is in the light of this wisdom that men must act."
