BISHOP BELO SAFE AND IN BAUCAU (BRIEF, CHURCH/RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS)
Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo has left Dili, the capital of East Timor. The prelate was evacuated today by helicopter to Baucau, the north-eastern sector of the Island. The news arrived from our MISNA sources, who also referred that Bishop Belo's transferral was organised by the Indonesian authorities. The prelate is currently hosted in Baucau by bishop Basilio do Nascimento. It is important to remember that Bishop Belo's residence in Dili was burned down this morning by the pro-Indonesia militias.
